When to Book Your Newborn Photographer on the Gold Coast (And Why Earlier Is Better)
If you're expecting your first baby, you're probably wondering when to book a newborn photographer. It's one of the most common questions I receive as a Gold Coast newborn photographer, and the answer might surprise you.
The ideal time to book is during your second trimester, around 20 to 30 weeks pregnant.
Not after your baby arrives. Not in your third trimester. Here's why booking early gives you the best experience, the most flexibility, and the photographer you actually want.
Why Book So Early?
Newborn photography is a specialised field. Unlike family portraits or maternity sessions, newborn photography requires specific training, safety certification, and a fully equipped studio. Photographers who specialise in this niche, like myself at Genesis Imagery, intentionally limit the number of newborns we photograph each month. This ensures every session is unhurried, baby-led, and safe.
Most established Gold Coast newborn photographers book out 2 to 4 months in advance. If you wait until your third trimester or after birth, your preferred photographer may have no availability. You'll be left choosing between whoever is still available, not who you actually want to trust with your days-old baby.
The Newborn Window: 5 to 14 Days Old
The best time to photograph your newborn is within the first two weeks of life. During this window:
• Your baby is still very sleepy and naturally curls into those womb-like poses
• They haven't yet developed baby acne or colic
• They feed frequently, which makes them content and settled
• Their skin still has that fresh, flaky newborn texture that photographs beautifully
After three weeks, babies become more alert, start stretching out, and are harder to settle into deep sleep. The session changes from posed newborn portraits to more awake, lifestyle-style images. Both are beautiful, but they're different. If you dream of those classic curled-up newborn photos, timing matters.
How We Handle Early and Late Arrivals
At Genesis Imagery, I understand babies don't follow calendars. That's why I use a priority window system instead of a fixed date.
When you book during pregnancy, I reserve space around your due date. Once your baby arrives, you simply message me and we lock in your actual session date within that first precious week. Early arrival? Late arrival? Exactly on time? We adjust with no stress and no penalty.
This system only works because I limit my monthly bookings. It's why I encourage every expectant mum to reach out early, so I can hold that space for you.
What If You've Already Had Your Baby?
Please don't worry. If your baby is already here and you haven't booked yet, reach out anyway. I often have last-minute flexibility, and I can photograph babies up to six weeks old. The session will simply be tailored to your baby's current stage, more alert expressions, gentle awake poses, and beautiful connection shots with parents.
Premature babies are always accommodated with extended flexibility. Their adjusted age and any NICU time is taken into account when scheduling.
What Happens After You Book?
Once you reserve your session with a 50% deposit, I send you a preparation guide covering everything from feeding timing to what to bring. We also schedule a brief consultation to discuss your vision, colour preferences, and any special requests.
Your session takes place in my private Pacific Pines studio, warm, calm, and fully equipped with everything your baby needs. You simply arrive. I provide the wraps, props, gowns, patience, and expertise.
Two weeks after your session, you'll return for your Gallery Reveal, the moment you first see your baby's portraits and select the collection that speaks to you.
Don't Let This Season Slip By
The newborn stage is impossibly brief. Within weeks, those tiny fingers unfurl, that sleepy curl stretches out, and your baby is suddenly holding their head up and looking around. You cannot get this time back.
Booking your newborn photographer early is not about being organised. It's about ensuring you don't miss the chance to hold onto something that is already slipping through your fingers.
Genesis Imagery is currently booking due dates from June to 2027. If you're expecting and haven't yet secured your session, I would love to hear from you.
