Gold Coast Newborn Photographer Guide for Expecting Mums

There’s nothing quite like those first few days with your newborn — the tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, and the overwhelming love that fills the room. As fleeting as this time is, your photos will last a lifetime, making newborn photography one of the most meaningful investments you’ll ever make.

But many parents feel unsure about when to book, how sessions work, or what to expect.

As a newborn photographer based on the Gold Coast, I’ve photographed hundreds of little ones, and I’m here to guide you every step of the way.

So here are 5 essential tips to know before booking your newborn session:

1. Book While You’re Still Pregnant (Ideally Around 20–30 Weeks)

Many parents wait until baby arrives to look into photos — but by then, your ideal window might be gone.

Why book early?

Newborn photographers (especially those who specialise in this delicate age) often limit the number of babies they book each month to allow flexibility around early or late arrivals. If you wait until after birth, you may miss out on a spot — especially during busy seasons.

Ideal time to book: Around 20–30 weeks pregnant, this also allows time if you decide to book a maternity session.

How it works: We pencil in your due date, and once baby arrives, we lock in your actual session date.

2. The Best Time to Photograph Your Baby? Between 5–14 Days Old

This is when your baby is still super sleepy, naturally curled up, and easier to gently pose into those iconic newborn setups.

What makes this window special?

• Babies sleep longer and deeper

• They’re less sensitive to being moved or wrapped

• They still have that “fresh newborn” look — think flaky skin, curled toes, and tiny lashes

After 2–3 weeks, babies begin to stretch out more, become more alert, and may develop baby acne or feeding-related changes. That said, if your baby is slightly older, it’s still possible to get beautiful photos — I always tailor sessions to suit your baby’s age and comfort.

3. Choose a Photographer Whose Style Matches Your Vision

Not all newborn photographers are the same — and that’s a good thing! Some use elaborate props and colors, while others focus on clean, minimal setups.

What’s your style?

• Do you love natural light and soft tones?

• Prefer earthy, neutral setups over bold colors?

• Want something timeless that will never date?

Before booking, look closely at a photographer’s portfolio to ensure their style speaks to you. At my Gold Coast studio, I specialise in natural, baby-led posing, soft earthy tones, and timeless editing — nothing too trendy, just beautiful images that feel real and gentle.

4. Ask About Newborn Safety & Experience

This one’s huge. Newborn photography is a specialist field, and your photographer should know exactly how to keep your baby comfortable and safe throughout the session.

✔️ Look for someone who:

• Has specific newborn training

• Works with safe, supported posing techniques

• Keeps the studio warm and calm

• Never forces babies into uncomfortable positions

• Uses spotters or composites for any poses that require extra support

Safety isn’t just a priority — it’s non-negotiable. I’ve spent years training in safe newborn handling, wrapping, and posing, and every part of my process is designed to be gentle, respectful, and baby-led.

5. Include Your Whole Family (Even if You’re Not “Photo Ready”)

One of the most common things I hear from new mums is:

“I haven’t slept, I don’t feel like myself — I don’t want to be in the photos.”

But trust me — you’ll never regret being in them. These are the moments your child will look back on to see how deeply loved they were from the very beginning.

I encourage every parent, sibling, and family member to be part of the session — whether it’s a quick snuggle, a kiss on baby’s head, or a simple close-up of hands. We keep things relaxed, guided, and flattering. You don’t need to be “done up” — just present.

Want a professional hair & makeup artist? I can recommend some beautiful Gold Coast artists who’ll come straight to the studio.
